Bastrop Life

Bastrop, TX Community

Bastrop, Texas, is turning over a new leaf this summer. If you’re a resident or just passing through, the Bastrop Public Library is rolling out a Summer Reading Program that’s more than just books. It’s a full-on celebration of stories, creativity, and community spirit. Whether you’re a parent looking for ways to keep the kids busy, a teen who wants to win prizes, or an adult who’s secretly competitive about reading, this summer has something for you.

Why Join a Summer Reading Program?

Texas summers can be hot. Sometimes, all you want is a cool place to relax and a good story to get lost in. The Bastrop Public Library offers that—and a lot more. Summer reading programs help kids keep up their reading skills, give families a reason to read together, and encourage everyone to try something new. Plus, there are prizes. Who doesn’t like prizes?

How It Works

The 2025 Bastrop Summer Reading Program runs from May 27 to July 26 and is open to all ages. Signing up is easy. You can register online or in person at the library at 1100 Church St. Once you’re in, you’ll track your reading minutes, join activities, and get the chance to win some cool stuff.

  • Read 500 minutes over the summer to earn a free book and a shot at prize drawings.

  • Track your reading online or with a paper log.

  • All ages can participate—kids, teens, and adults.

What’s New for 2025? Creativity Takes Center Stage

This year’s theme is all about creativity. The library is mixing reading with hands-on art, crafts, and even science. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Art Workshops: Try your hand at painting, woodworking, photography, or textile crafts. No experience required—just bring your curiosity.

  • Live Performances: Don’t miss shows like the Ramazinis Circus and the Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show at the Bastrop Convention Center. These events are free and open to everyone.

  • Bilingual Storytime: Thursdays alternate between stories in English and Spanish, plus playtime for kids and coffee chats for parents.

  • Weekly Storytimes: Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. feature books, songs, and crafts for kids.

  • Adult Craft Groups: Sewing, quilting, knitting, and more—perfect for unwinding and making new friends.

  • Educational Talks: Learn about local history, gardening, and more with special guest speakers and workshops.

Prizes and Incentives

Reading is its own reward, but a little extra motivation never hurts. Here’s what’s up for grabs:

  • Kids and Teens: Complete your reading challenge and you’ll earn a free book. Every 500 minutes logged gets you into prize drawings for things like gift cards, books, and more.

  • Adults: Track your books and you’ll be entered to win prizes, too. Craft groups and workshops offer their own fun rewards.

  • Everyone: Attending events and workshops can also earn you entries for special prizes.

Special Events to Mark on Your Calendar

  • May 27: Program kickoff at the Bastrop Public Library. Sign up, receive your reading log, and explore the first round of activities.

  • June 24: The Ramazinis Circus brings their show to the Bastrop Convention Center.

  • July 22: Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show—science and fun for all ages.

  • Wednesdays and Fridays: Weekly storytimes at 10:30 a.m.

  • Thursdays: Bilingual Storytime and Platica con Cafecito.

Not Just for Kids

Adults, don’t think you’re off the hook. The library’s summer program is a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and even win prizes. Craft sessions, gardening classes, and history talks are all on the schedule. You can also join the reading challenge and show the kids how it’s done.
